We’re celebrating English Wine Week

English Wine Week 2020 is 20th June to 28th June, and this week we’ve been celebrating some of the best wines our country has to offer.

Everyone who follows us knows that we’re huge fans of English wines. We have a phenomenal Davenport package on offer, which is one of our favourites, and during lockdown have sampled the Forty Hall Bacchaus.

Forty Hall is super interesting – according to the label it’s the only commercial scaled vineyard in London, run as a not for profit, by volunteers.

When it comes to the Davenport, our favourite is the Horsmonden which is a blend of Ortega, Faber, Siegerrebe, Bacchaus and Huxelrebe and it’s probably Steve’s favourite white wine, however the Diamond Fields, which is a Pinot Noir is a stunning red that can’t be overlooked.

But it’s not just that they’re grown in England that makes us love these wines – it’s the quality, which is something we always pride ourselves on here at One Day Wednesday.

The Davenport and the Forty Hall really are fantastic wines and compete well with anything in our opinion.

Men’s Health Week: Enjoy a Red Wine Guilt Free

Theres’s often argument over the health benefits of red wine, and we suggest drinking in moderation, so the health outweighs any other effects, however a quality organic red wine is jam-packed with antioxidants and inflammatory properties. These benefits come down to the concentration of polyphenols, particularly one called resveratrol, which can be found in the skin of grapes.

This week is Men’s Health Week 15-21st June and we want to talk about what part wine can play in that, in moderation of course!

Resveratrol is a plant compound that acts like an antioxidant. The top food sources include red wine, grapes, some berries and peanuts.

This compound tends to be concentrated mostly in the skins and seeds of grapes and berries. These parts of the grape are included in the fermentation of red wine, hence its particularly high concentration of resveratrol.

Red wine can do wonders for your mood, and science suggests it can be great for your heartyour brain, and your muscles, too. Some research suggests that red wine even has cancer-fighting properties.

So before you feel guilty about enjoying a glass of your favourite tipple, bare in mind that there are some positive health benefits to drinking red wine!

Drinking responsibly in lockdown

Ok it needs to be said – if you haven’t been drinking responsibly during lockdown now is the time to give it some consideration.

Theres been a lot of tasting new wines going on here, mostly to keep recommendations current and insightful, but some days it’s spilled over pretty well into some more broad tastings including vodka, gin and anything else in the cupboards.

Last year Steve did 100 days no drinking from 1/9 to 9/13 and talked about responsible drinking then too.

Just check your alcohol consumption for the remainder of lockdown. More consumption pretty much equals more sales for One Day Wednesday, but we support responsible drinking above all else.

Life’s too short to drink bad wine!

Happy Bank Holiday weekend! Hope everyone is keeping well in lockdown and staying in positive spirits.

During lockdown we’ve had several conversations with people around wine quality. With lockdown in place its increasingly more difficult to get hold of particular wines in shops and supermarkets you might usually enjoy, supermarkets aren’t offering discounts like they used to and some have found they just aren’t receiving quality on the amounts they are spending with some of the wine they are getting delivered from some online wine merchants.

Recent Tastings – April 2020

The last few weeks I’ve been busy tasting a bunch of wines ready for some of our boxes. They’ve all been very good and a lot of them will likely make it into boxes in the future, whether that’s in subscriptions, features or both. Some people reading this will have already had some of them too, which I’m pretty excited about.

Of particular note was the no added sulphite Chardonnay, which was exactly to my personal taste of white wine; the Muscat which was sweet and syrupy and the Riesling which was sharp and crisp.

Probably some videos and blogs coming on each bottle soon.

Xmas feature – first look

I’m totally pumped about this. I can’t wait to bring it out properly, although if you watch the insta stories you’ll already have some idea.

I completely missed Christmas last year which sucked. It wasn’t really in my control and I was gutted. This year I’m making up for it and coming in hot.

So I’m working on the feature, which is intended to be about gift giving but will also have something for the people who’ll be entertaining over Christmas and wanna break out some awesome stuff.

Releasing this week. Get ready.

100 days – update

It’s been 27 days now, with only 2 (planned) exceptions. Can’t remember the first one, the second was an 18th.

Overall, my skin has improved, my sleep quality (not duration) has improved, my fitness (and ability to train harder) and my resting heart rate have improved too – it’s great.

The impact is so large because of how much and regularly I’ve been drinking over the last 12 months or more. The compound impact of it makes a difference all around.

That’s why responsible drinking is so important.

The big time health stuff that the doctors and health pro’s talk about is important, but it’s the day to day issues that can affect the most people in the most regular way.

Even though I’m selling wine, I’m promoting responsible drinking.

You don’t have to have a bottle of wine a night – that’s probably not a good idea really. You can enjoy a good bottle of wine a couple of times a week maybe, rather than a poor bottle every night.

Generally speaking I drink spirits and wine – gin and whisky are my go to drinks but vodka can make its way into the mix too. It’s very rare I drink a beer/lager really. I think a lot of people are becoming the same.

The price points appear to be merging a little, so it’s maybe just as easy to buy a bottle of gin as it is a box of beers. Then a couple of gins per night and it soon racks up.

I want to try and encourage everyone to drink more responsibly, whether you drink our wine or not.

Quitting drinking for 100 days

If you follow our Instagram then you’ll have seen a lot of me talking about quitting drinking for 100 days. I actually stopped in 31/8/19.

A bunch of people have said “but you run a wine business” and that’s exactly the point.

I’ve quit drinking thanks to my self awareness. I realised I’ve been putting myself under a lot of pressure recently and coping (at least in part) with a fairly large alcohol intake, which really doesn’t help at all and isn’t great for short or long term health.

I also want to promote responsible drinking. Yes, I run a wine business, but that doesn’t mean I want to promote unhealthy habits. I’m a slave to my impulses, readers of this may or may not be. I want to be clear that it’s not all about balancing your social events around alcohol. That’s not healthy either.

I also want to take better care of my body. I train a lot. It’s harder with alcohol especially when it’s compounded over days and weeks, so I’m focusing on getting back into great shape during these 100 days. You’ve only got one body that carries you around for your entire life so looking after it is important.

How do you regulate your drinking?

As a business selling wine, this might not seem like the normal thing to talk about, but it’s actually something quite important.

We’ve all seen the warnings about drinking in moderation, but that’s an instruction, do we need to go deeper?

Now more than ever I see drinking as part of the entertainment, with friends or family. It isn’t always the kinds of wine we sell – it could be beers or spirits etc – but it’s always a loose part of the fun. No one seems to get really drunk and it doesn’t get out of hand.

Yeah in the summer the frequency increases a little because of the weather, the BBQs etc, but mostly it’s fairly relaxed.

But I wonder where that blurs. Not where it becomes a problem, before that, when drinking becomes the entertainment.

I don’t want to rant or lecture in this post, or cast and aspersions, just ask the question in a responsible way.
